Diwali!
Many of our students at May Watts are celebrating Diwali throughout the week! We were able to talk about this holiday yesterday during ELL class and connect it with other holidays that are celebrated by other students throughout the year such as Ramadan, Christmas, Hanukahh, Chinese New Year, etc. The students found it very interesting to compare their own traditions with those that surround the Diwali holiday!

This week in ELL...
It's hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the month of October!
This week in ELL:
Kindergarten: We have been working with the letter "R" and focusing on songs and poems that discuss rectangles. We have been drawing pictures in our journals of rectangles that we see in the classroom. Our week will continue to review the shapes with an emphasis on the rectangle and words that start with the letter "R"
First Grade: We have been working on describing different animal habitats. Since the students went to the zoo, we have been talking about the characteristics of different habitats and identifying animals that may be found. This week will have a focus on the rainforest and describing characteristics that connect with this habitat.
Second Grade: We are working on the skill predicting outcomes. The students have been using this skill in their regular classrooms and we will be incorporating making predictions into different lessons this week. We have looked at different fictional stories and predicted the endings, tomorrow we will be analyzing data and formulating predictions based on our data collection, and Thursday will be spent making predictions for a science experiment that tests how many dictionaries can be supported by egg shells!
Third Grade: We have been working on comparing and contrasting as well as identifying facts and opinions. We have compared and contrasted different kinds of maps as well as globes and have discussed facts and opinions that relate to maps. We will also work on providing directions and continue our use of map skills.
Fourth Grade: Fourth grade will be working on reinforcing the topic of the Northeast region and incorporating the vocabulary from their story Lou Gehrig that is being read in the classroom whenever possible. Today, we tried to create stories or sentences that used more than one of these vocabulary words and that also gave a good description of the meaning of the words.
Fifth Grade: In co-teaching with Mrs. Bennick's flex group, we began identifying and describing various elements from colonial times. Throughout the week, we will be comparing and contrasting our ways of life today with those of the colonial times. We will also write a response that examines our preference for the way of life that we would rather have in our world today.
That will pretty much wrap up our week in ELL class! Again, please let me know if you have any questions!

Short Week!
This week is a short one with Columbus Day and our Half Day today. Here is a look at what each grade level has been working on during the week:
Kindergarten: Continues to work with shapes and using pattern blocks to create different objects. They are continuing to identify triangles, squares and circles. They will be going on a shape hunt this week in the classroom and sharing with partners the objects that they find.
First Grade: We will be discussing their Zoo field trip! They will write in their journals about their favorite part of the zoo trip and then mix-pair-share with their peers to read and discuss their journal entries.
Second Grade: We continue to learn about the stages of the water cycle. Second graders will look at photographs and identify what stage of the water cycle is shown in the picture, supporting their answer. They will be journaling using the sentence frame "I think this stage is ____ because ____".
Third Grade: We are continuing to work on identifying synonyms and antonyms and describing examples of each. Students have been working on creating paper chains in partners, discussing synonyms and antonyms (Ex: "The synonym for big is large" "The antonym for cold is hot").
Fourth Grade: We have been discussing narrative elements such as setting, plot, and characters. On Tuesday, we identified these elements to create a story that we called "A day in ELL class" where we identified the characters being the students in the classroom, the setting as ELL class, and we shared our ideas for what happened during our time in ELL class (the plot).
Fifth Grade: I will be co-teaching Flex group time with Mrs. Bennick in her room and working with the students on elements of poetry such as onomatopoeia and hyperbole. Students will also be creating poems of their own and sharing them with their group.

This week in ELL...
Reminder: PARENT NIGHT!
ELL parent night is tonight, 10/3, from 7-8 p.m. in the LMC followed by a tour of the classroom. Come meet Miss Lundeen and Mrs. Krishnan and hear more about the ELL program!
Kindergarten: Continuing to work on identifying shapes and using language that is used to identify and compare/ contrast different shapes.
First Grade: We are continuing to work on identifying weather patterns and seasons. First grade is working on speaking and writing sentences identifying these different weather patterns that can be seen in each of the four seasons.
Second Grade: We are reinforcing their science classroom unit of the water cycle and understanding that cycles are continuous. We are creating water cycle wheels to help visualize each of the stages of the water cycle (precipitation, condensation, evaporation and accumulation). We will also be working on making observations and predictions.
Third Grade: We will be working on comparing and contrasting skills, defining and providing examples of synonyms, and making/ explaining observations through the use of their bones and muscles unit. These skills will all be practiced through what they have previously learned in this science unit in the regular classroom.
Fourth Grade: We will be working on making connections and making predictions through discussions about our government. We will be identifying different levels of government as well as examining the the three branches (Judicial, Legislative, Executive). We will read stories and work on connecting our prior knowledge with the new information as well as work on reading responses to the stories.
Fifth Grade: We will be working on making real world connections through non-fiction text. We will also practice reading responses to stories provided.
