This week in ELL!
Winter Break is almost upon us!
Here is a look at what each grade level is working on this week:
Kindergarten: These students are working on the letter "D" in their classrooms and will be practicing their writing skills and reading stories that surround the letter D. Kindergartners will be working on creating sentences and using vocabulary that they will be working with in class.
First Grade: These first graders are working on measurement and comparing different objects. We have been reading stories and looking at objects and identifying big, bigger, biggest; heavy, heavier, heaviest; tall, taller, tallest; etc. Students will be working with small groups to observe and analyze different objects and incorporating the numbered-heads together cooperative strategy to share their information.
Second Grade: Second grade is working with symmetry this week. Earlier in the week, we finished our discussion about comparing and contrasting 2D and 3D shapes, now we are working on creating pictures that are symmetrical. Our language skill for this week is creating and describing drawings that have symmetry or are the "same".
Third Grade: This week, our focus is on animal adaptations and understanding that all animals need some adaptation to survive. We have read stories, looked at national geographic videos, and even pretended to be whales and experimented with "blubber". Students had the opportunity to feel what it would be like to be a whale in icy cold water without the special adaptation of blubber to help keep them warm. We did this experiment using a bucket of ice water and zip-loc bags filled with vegetable shortening (Don't worry the "blubber" was in separate bags, so the 3rd graders did not get messy :) )
Fourth Grade: We are exploring the Southeast this week! We are reading documents and taking virtual explorations through the Florida Everglades to experience what life is like down in the Southeast Region. Our main focus to assist with their social studies instruction in class is identifying vocabulary related to the geography, economy, and the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
Fifth Grade: Mrs. Bennick and Miss Lundeen are working with 5th grade students on exploring multi-cultural books and analyizing interesting information from each. We have completed synthesizing reading guides to help maintain our focus and summarize key information.
These units will continue into parts of next week due to the shortened time frame! As always, please let me know of any questions :)

Happy December!
December is officially upon us! The weather is starting to feel colder and Winter will slowly be approaching. Here is a look at what each grade level has been up to in ELL class...
Kindergarten: The students have been discussing healthy food choices. We have looked at different pictures to identify what foods are healthy choices, what foods are unhealthy, how they taste (salty, sweet, bitter, sour) and we have also described by speaking and writing why certain foods are healthy.
First Grade: Last week, our focus was on the skill of rhyming! We read various stories, used our rhyming "Brag Bag" to make predictions of what objects rhyme with our clue, and played Read and Rhyme where students needed to read a word and identify a rhyme that matched the written word.
Second Grade: Second Grade has been working on a nutrition unit as well. Last week, we discussed what foods are healthy and what foods are unhealthy by creating a "healthy meal" using a paper plate and pictures from magazines. We also discussed the many ways to describe how foods taste aside from just sweet, sour, salty, etc. This week, we will be reviewing key vocabulary and discussing the concept of trees from their The Secret Life of Trees story from their classrooms.
Third Grade: Third Grade is beginning their animal habitat unit and we will be focusing on keywords and concepts that revolve around habitats. The students will be able to identify various habitats and describe key characteristics of those (climate, animals, location, etc). Each student will be doing some research on a particular habitat and reporting their findings to the rest of our group!
Fourth Grade: After completing the Rocks, minerals and volcanoes unit, the students will be discovering the Southeast region. We will be reading non-fiction material, watching National Geographic videos and creating brochures to identify key components of this region.
Fifth Grade: Mrs. Bennick and Miss Lundeen have been working together to focus on key literature skills throughout the week in our Flex group time. This week, we will be reading a mystery story and attempting to find the clues within the story to identify the solution to the mystery!
That will wrap up our first week in December :) As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

This week in ELL!
The weather is now cooling down, Winter is slowly coming upon us!
It was wonderful to meet so many parents who have children in the ELL program at conferences last week! Although I was not able to attend every conference, I enjoyed the time that I had attending as many as possible and meeting all of you :)
As we head into Thanksgiving week, here is a look at what the students have been doing in ELL:
Kindergarten: Kindergarten has been working on the Five Senses. We have done various activities including listening to sounds and responding to what we hear, playing I spy games to identify what we see around is and using our sense of touch to guess what objects are without looking.
First Grade: 1st Grade has been reviewing their Rocks unit. Last week, we discussed characteristics of rocks. This week, we sequenced the layers of the Earth and described characteristics of each layer. We are finishing this week by becoming geologists or "Rock Hunters" and identifying where our mystery rocks come from in the Earth! We also created a graph that shows where most and the least of our rocks come from.
Second Grade: Second grade has been differentiating between what is a fact and what is an opinion. We have used their reading anthology story, Johnny Appleseed to guide our discussions about facts and opinions. We have worked on identifying keywords (I feel, like, it seems, etc) to provide our opinions and stating them in complete sentences.
Third Grade: 3rd Grade has been discussing key terms related to government and has started to identify three key components of our United States History. We have been diving deeper into the Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary War, and Constitution and identifying how these three important events have constructed our History. This week, we read stories in partners related to these events and created a foldable that identifies at least one fact about each event.
Fourth Grade: 4th grade is also studying Rocks and Minerals. We have been reading stories and watching video clips that describe ways to test characteristics of rocks (hardness, streak, luster, color) and have identified what each of these properties represents. We created a foldable activity identifying facts and have also read different non-fiction stories to describe igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.
Fifth Grade: Mrs. Bennick and I have been working with 5th grade flex on fictional stories. Earlier this week, we read aloud a story and had the students fill in a graphic organizer identifying key elements to show understanding. Later this week, we read stories in small groups and discussed narrative elements within the stories (plot, setting and characters)

Happy November!
Here's a look at our first week of November in ELL!
Kindergarten: We have been working with the letter "t" and identifying words that begin with "t". Through various activities, we have also worked on identifying things that are "real and not real" (For instance, looking at real pictures of turtles and not real pictures of turtles.
First Grade: We are starting to talk about describing characteristics of rocks. Students have been working on singing songs that describe characteristics of rocks and also exploring rocks to identify their characteristics (shiny, sparkly, shaped, rough, smooth, etc) using their senses of sight and touch. Throughout the week, we will be working in partners to explore and describe the characteristics that we see in different kinds of rocks.
Second Grade: We will be working on defining what a synonym means (same) and orally explaining different examples of synonyms. Students will be working in small groups to read, write and share their words with their small groups.
Third Grade: We are working on identifying and describing homophones, homonyms and homographs. Students have been working on developing their own vocabulary to differentiate between the spelling of words and their meanings. We have been working in partners this week to develop words and illustrations that connect with the meanings of each pair of "homophones, homonyms and homographs"
Fourth Grade: As we conclude our study of the American Revolution and the Northeast region, we are writing our own Immigration stories. Through discussions about immigration, fourth grade ELL students discovered that they are all immigrants from different countries including; Korea, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and different areas of India. Each student will be thinking about their immigration experiences, writing their story using visuals on a poster, and sharing it with the rest of the group!
Fifth Grade: With Mrs. Bennick's flex group, we have been working on studying the life of Roberto Clemente. We have discussed different aspects of his life and will be concluding this week with a timeline of major events that occurred throughout his lifetime.
Conferences are next week! Due to the large amount of students in the ELL program this year, I will be unable to meet individually with all families of each student due to the limited amount of available time slots. I will be trying to push in to as many conferences with general classroom teachers and will be available throughout various times of the day on Wednesday and Thursday. If you wish to have a meeting to discuss the progress of your student in ELL, please contact me as soon as possible to schedule a time to meet. Thank you for your cooperation!

Diwali!
Many of our students at May Watts are celebrating Diwali throughout the week! We were able to talk about this holiday yesterday during ELL class and connect it with other holidays that are celebrated by other students throughout the year such as Ramadan, Christmas, Hanukahh, Chinese New Year, etc. The students found it very interesting to compare their own traditions with those that surround the Diwali holiday!

This week in ELL...
It's hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the month of October!
This week in ELL:
Kindergarten: We have been working with the letter "R" and focusing on songs and poems that discuss rectangles. We have been drawing pictures in our journals of rectangles that we see in the classroom. Our week will continue to review the shapes with an emphasis on the rectangle and words that start with the letter "R"
First Grade: We have been working on describing different animal habitats. Since the students went to the zoo, we have been talking about the characteristics of different habitats and identifying animals that may be found. This week will have a focus on the rainforest and describing characteristics that connect with this habitat.
Second Grade: We are working on the skill predicting outcomes. The students have been using this skill in their regular classrooms and we will be incorporating making predictions into different lessons this week. We have looked at different fictional stories and predicted the endings, tomorrow we will be analyzing data and formulating predictions based on our data collection, and Thursday will be spent making predictions for a science experiment that tests how many dictionaries can be supported by egg shells!
Third Grade: We have been working on comparing and contrasting as well as identifying facts and opinions. We have compared and contrasted different kinds of maps as well as globes and have discussed facts and opinions that relate to maps. We will also work on providing directions and continue our use of map skills.
Fourth Grade: Fourth grade will be working on reinforcing the topic of the Northeast region and incorporating the vocabulary from their story Lou Gehrig that is being read in the classroom whenever possible. Today, we tried to create stories or sentences that used more than one of these vocabulary words and that also gave a good description of the meaning of the words.
Fifth Grade: In co-teaching with Mrs. Bennick's flex group, we began identifying and describing various elements from colonial times. Throughout the week, we will be comparing and contrasting our ways of life today with those of the colonial times. We will also write a response that examines our preference for the way of life that we would rather have in our world today.
That will pretty much wrap up our week in ELL class! Again, please let me know if you have any questions!

Short Week!
This week is a short one with Columbus Day and our Half Day today. Here is a look at what each grade level has been working on during the week:
Kindergarten: Continues to work with shapes and using pattern blocks to create different objects. They are continuing to identify triangles, squares and circles. They will be going on a shape hunt this week in the classroom and sharing with partners the objects that they find.
First Grade: We will be discussing their Zoo field trip! They will write in their journals about their favorite part of the zoo trip and then mix-pair-share with their peers to read and discuss their journal entries.
Second Grade: We continue to learn about the stages of the water cycle. Second graders will look at photographs and identify what stage of the water cycle is shown in the picture, supporting their answer. They will be journaling using the sentence frame "I think this stage is ____ because ____".
Third Grade: We are continuing to work on identifying synonyms and antonyms and describing examples of each. Students have been working on creating paper chains in partners, discussing synonyms and antonyms (Ex: "The synonym for big is large" "The antonym for cold is hot").
Fourth Grade: We have been discussing narrative elements such as setting, plot, and characters. On Tuesday, we identified these elements to create a story that we called "A day in ELL class" where we identified the characters being the students in the classroom, the setting as ELL class, and we shared our ideas for what happened during our time in ELL class (the plot).
Fifth Grade: I will be co-teaching Flex group time with Mrs. Bennick in her room and working with the students on elements of poetry such as onomatopoeia and hyperbole. Students will also be creating poems of their own and sharing them with their group.

Here's a look at what's happening in ELL...
Kindergarten: We finished up our "cookie jar" name game and we have gotten to know all of our friends' names in class! We wrote our first journal entry and shared our favorite kind of cookie with each other in class. We also made a graph of our favorite cookies and counted up to find out that chocolate chip is the most favorite cookie :) We are now moving on to our unit on shapes this week.
First Grade: We got to know each other by playing the "Cookie Jar" game. We practiced writing sentences in our journals to explain to others in our class what our favorite kind of cookie is. We are now talking about weather and the different types of weather that we see in each of the four seasons.
Second Grade: Last week and yesterday we worked on map skills and identifying what can be found on different kinds of maps. We have been working in partners to talk about how we can use different maps. This week, all of second grade will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Third Grade: We have been finishing up our unit on identifying people in the community, their jobs, and what different things we can see in a community. The big idea that we have been talking about is that "Communities are made up of people and places". We designed our own community books as well as created our own communities.
Fourth Grade: We have been working on map skills in fourth grade. We have identified characteristics of different kinds of maps by thinking in smaller groups/ pairs and then sharing with the whole group. We will be creating maps of the school this week and providing directions to each other to see if we can find our way around the school using each others' maps!
Fifth Grade: We are working on making inferences by text that we are provided. We are practicing identifying something based on different clues that are provided to us. This week, the whole fifth grade is also taking the Cognitive Abilities Test on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

What's happening in ELL?
We have officially started our ELL routine with all grade levels!
During the end of last week and into this week, students have been getting to know their ELL peers as well as myself. We completed introductions and finished "All About Me" pages that allowed each student to tell their name, age, favorite color, number of people in their family, what they like to do and the language/s that are spoken at their home.
The students found it very interesting to count up all of the different languages that exist within just their own grade level! As we continue further into this week and into next week, we will be covering topics that are being discussed in their general classrooms.

Please send me an e-mail or call me at any time if you have any questions or concerns :)

More ELL support!
We have a new teacher, Mrs. Erin Krishnan who is going to be helping out with our Kindergarten and First grade ELL students! Due to the large number of ELL students in these grades, it will be very helpful to have her working with me in the classroom to help support all of our students :)

Welcome to Miss Lundeen's ELL Blog!
I'd like to welcome all ELL parents to my blog! I am very excited to work with your children for the 2011-2012 school year. My plan is to update my blog weekly to let you know what is happening in the ELL classroom. I hope that you find this to be very useful and informative. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at any time!
